ANSI B16 47 series A flanges is stronger, heavier and thicker than flanges of ANSI B16 47 series B, where the same pressure rating and size is concerned. Series B ANSI B16 47 flanges require more fasteners, but smaller ones, as compared to Series A. Series A flanges ANSI B16 47 has the capacity to withstand more external loading than that of series B ANSI B16 47. The bolt circle diameter of Series B ANSI B16 47 flanges is smaller than that of Series A ANSI B16 47 flanges. As a result of this smaller bolt circle diameter, after installation, the Series B ANSI B16 47 flanges exhibit lesser movement. Blind flanges and weld neck flanges, in raised face type (RF), are defined in Series A and Series B. Ring type joint (RTJ) flanges are only defined in Series A ANSI B16. Looking at it from a commercial perspective, flanges of ANSI B16.47 Series are costlier than flanges of ANSI B16 47 Series. ANSI B16.47 slip on flanges are very clearly, as is in the name itself, pipe flanges that can be slipped on over a pipe. These types of flanges are manufactured in such a way that their inside diameter, is a bit larger than the outside diameter of the pipe. These are connected to the pipe, by means of a fillet weld at the bottom and at the top of the flange. Slip on flanges of ANSI B16.47 are basically provided with a flat face or a raised face. When slip on flanges of ANSI B16.47 require a raised face, for these pipe flanges under 400#, the standard height is 1/16″. And for slip on flanges of ANSI B16.47 of 400# and up, the standard raised face height is 1/4″.
